Since Amazon Won’t Let Me Update My Reviews

Caveat Emptor

What I’ve never been able to figure out about Amazon’s review process is how they justify their (sometimes) iron-fisted restrictions.

I have had several instances where I attempted to revise a review based on living with a product over time and found Amazon would not allow a revision.  Yet I see revised reviews on Amazon all the time.  And I am a very active and absolutely honest reviewer.  If I tell you something is great it’s because my experience with the product is exactly that.  On the other hand, If I tell you it sucks dead dog dick, it’s because that’s exactly what my experience was.

My original review (above the revision date) as a 4 star review.  I attempted to revise it down to a 3 star review with the updates.

So today I attempted to update my review of our Cuisinart DCC-1200RT 12 -Cup Coffeemaker.

Updating the title to:

I shouldn’t need an exorcist to get a decent cup of coffee

And the body to:

Basically this is great and I really like the retro touches. The color is very nice and fits in our decor. However… You really have to make sure the top is seated tightly. We had it overflow coffee all over the counter necessitating a massive cleanup. It would seem when the lid is closed that the filter cone would also be thoroughly seated.

Not necessarily it seems.

Otherwise it makes great coffee.

Update October 25, 2018

This is our 3rd Cuisinart coffee maker in about 10 years.

We have had this one for 14 months.

This machine has started some strange behavior. Mid-brew it will just shut off. The power light goes off and it stops brewing / warming functions. You have to restart it when you figure this out. It’s done this twice in the last week or so. This morning I had to restart it twice.

Overall, I like the design and it makes good coffee, but the failure rate is very simply unacceptable.

And…

Maddeningly it will periodically overflow the basket, pouring coffee (and grounds) all over the heating element and the counter if the carafe is even slightly off-center. Or not. I always double check this when I prep it at night and unless the cat is swatting it around – or gremlins are messing with it – it will still overflow periodically. As much as I love the design, I absolutely HATE the inconsistencies. Having a demonically possessed coffee maker is a royal pain.

I shouldn’t need an exorcist to get a decent cup of coffee.

That is the full, updated review I attempted to submit this morning.

When I press the [SUBMIT] button, I get the following non-specific message:

This brings up some questions:
If you’ve ever tried to contact Amazon regarding anything, you know how maddeningly frustrating a task this can be, and frankly it’s not important enough to me to invest the time.  So I thought I’d post the review here.  This is strictly a PSA so that anyone else searching for information on this product can get an honest assessment based on my experience.  We have gone through 3 of these machines in about 10 years.  Slightly different models (different features) but the same basic design.  I am very disappointed in the lifespan of these machines.  A coffeemaker should not be (and this is not) a complicated product, plagued with technical failures.  It should last about 10 years or so.  Maybe more.  They are not cheap either.  This model is $109.00.  I should not have to buy another one Every.Single.Year.  Knowwhattamean?

On another note entirely…

The Amazon Review Process

I actually had Amazon suspend my right to review (for life) several months ago because they said I was in cahoots with some vendor and giving dishonest reviews.  That I somehow had a vested interest in some product.
  • This was eternal.
  • No appeal process.
  • No justification.
  • No specifics of any kind.
  • Which made me question the veracity of every Amazon review I had ever read.
I replied back with “Prove It
Amazingly a day or so later I was informed my right to review was reinstated.
I am becoming disillusioned with Amazon at this point.  I have discovered I can frequently get competitive or even better prices direct from the distributors with the same shipping terms I get from Amazon.  The convenience of shopping with the Bezos Behemoth seems to come with an unseen price.  Transparency comes immediately to mind.
And don’t even get me started with the price of Kindle Books.  I can buy 1st editions hardcover at Costco for less than the Kindle edition of new releases.

December 3 2018 update.

I just received two emails from Amazon saying they would not post two of my recent reviews and with no concrete reasons.

Verbatim emails:

January 2019 Update:

REXING S300 Dash Cam Pro with 1080P 170 Degree Wide Angle

I have purchased two of these Rexing dash cams in the last two years.

The first one failed in less than 18 months.

I bought a new one and this time added the Square Trade extended warranty for $4.22.

This seemed like a reasonable enough deal, because:

  1. The camera works well (when it works).
  2. I like the mount affixed to the windshield,
(it makes removal and replacement very easy)
  3. And the wiring for it is already in place.

However…

Recently the dashcam has had a smeared display.  It looks like it’s focused on a very large, very bright light.  So I contacted Amazon for a replacement.  Word of warning:  Once you figure out a way to contact Amazon for help, set aside a LOT of time to resolve any issues.  I called them about this on January 12.  Wasting more time than I wanted, because the whole Square Trade warranty thing seems to be a mystery to Amazon support personnel, I was eventually emailed Rexing contact information without explanation.

When I emailed Rexing the same day, I got back a response to email the seller, Think Island LLC, which I did January 16.

Response?
<crickets>

So January 24, 2019 I call Amazon again.

This is an even longer conversation, resulting in them connecting me to Square Trade and emailing me their information.  The whole Square Trade process is less than friendly, but eventually I was told on the phone I would receive an email with information.  Meanwhile I’m going to their website and entering all the information.  When I’m done, it informs me the device is covered under manufacturer warranty.  So back to Rexing I go with another email.

Rexing’s response?
<crickets>

Let me just say I’m never buying another of these dashcams.  I am currently reviewing my other options, because this is far more grief than the camera is worth.  My review of this product on Amazon has somehow vanished completely along with all the other reviews.  Currently the listing displays no stars and no reviews – and says “Be the first to review this item”  395 answered questions, no stars and no reviews.  Does this seem odd to anyone but me?

If I were to review it again, it would go something like this.

Rexing S300 Dashcam

REXING S300 Dash Cam Pro with 1080P 170 Degree Wide Angle

✯✯☆☆☆

Two stars

This dashcam works great when it works, but I have had two of them and neither one has lasted more than 18 months.  Contacting Rexing for support is an exercise in exasperation.  Contacting Amazon customer service is at least as bad.
My recommendation:  Research all the current products online, find a vendor who actually provides something resembling customer service and avoid Amazon like the plague.  Get used to not receiving your order in two days.  Put on your big girl panties and have a little patience.  Delayed gratification was just fine with everyone for generations and it should be good enough for all of us now.

And on the topic of extended warranties…

I have never gotten an extended warranty in the past.
And I never will again.

Amazon sells their Square Trade warranty for lots of electronics.  Based on the failure rate of both my earlier Plantronics headsets and the Rexing dashcam, I opted for the extended warranty on both.

In my experience the is a COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY.

I recently lost my Plantronics 5200 bluetooth headset.  Filing a claim with Square Trade was a Total Waste A Time (TWAT).

Even though they have an option to select Lost or Stolen as a category.  And when selecting Lost, they ask for an explanation, you might as well just start throwing dollar bills out the window.  After entering all the information and uploading the receipt I was THEN informed Loss was not covered under their worthless excuse for a warranty.

So my advice.

NEVER buy an extended warranty plan if your time is worth anything at all.

Especially from Amazon / Square Trade.

Period.

Have a nice day.

So here is my response to Amazon.com and Jeff Bezos:

  1. This is the very last straw.
  2. You can go fuck yourself.
  3. I am never reviewing another thing on Amazon
  4. I am going to suggest to everyone I know that they very carefully consider whether they can trust Amazon and the reviews therein.
  5. I am going to make every possible effort to make my purchases ANYWHERE but Amazon, as I clearly cannot trust the review process.
  6. Jeff Bezos you can go to hell.  Go directly to hell.  Do not pass GO.  Do not collect another dime from me.
